Fullmetal Alchemist
Fullmetal Alchemist, one of the most successful Japanese franchises of recent years, began as a popular manga (graphic novel), then made platform leaps to television, video game and theatrical film formats. The story is set in the early 20th century in a world similar to ours, except that instead of developing mechanically, technology has advanced in the field of alchemy.

The intricate plot revolves around the young Elric brothers who, trying to revive their deceased mother using alchemy, pay a terrible price for violating one of the sacred taboos of the art. Edward loses an arm and a leg, which must be replaced with metal prosthetics. His brother Alphonse loses his physical body in the experiment, although Edward saves his brother's spirit by attaching it to a suit of armor. Vowing to restore his brother's body and his own arm and leg, Edward joins the military as a State Alchemist -- nicknamed the "Fullmetal Alchemist" for his prosthetic limbs -- so that he can search for the legendary Philosopher's Stone. As they travel, the brothers become deeply embroiled in political and personal conflict and must track down secrets surrounding the Philosopher's Stone, a lethal group of homunculi, and their own missing father.
